Mexicree - Aztec

The Mehxica-Azteca-Chichimeca dance is a traditional dance that originates from Mexico that was created about 700 years ago. This dance is a ceremony and a way of life to honor the Sacred Elements of life: fire, earth, wind and water. It is a form of meditation that uses the body as an instrument to express our spirit to the universe. This beautiful culture was passed down from generation to generation.

From the Mehxica-Aztec nation, Coyotl Xiukhpainally has been practicing his culture and traditions with his family for most of his life in his community of Mexico and later in various locations of the United States. This dance was introduced by Coyotl Xiuhpainally, at the Native Center of Toronto in 2004, where his wife, Ambie Kehewin/Xiukhpainally, from the Cree tribe, and people from different nations started to dance every Wednesday. The Condor and Eagle prophecy is about unification of all nations. Three years later in 2008, the group was named Ollin Tohnatiuh, in honor of traditional prophecies; Earth changes and cycles to come.

After 500 years of invasions we are in process of decolonization and re-establishment of our cultures and the hidden truths of all native nations. Our native tradition keeps us alive, through our Huehuetl-drums and dances, that expresses our heart and keeps us in harmony.

In Unity,

Firedance Opening Ritual and Blessing

Spirits of the Fire, Come to us…
Creating a community through drums and fire. This year’s opening ritual is a celebration of the tribes that come together to create our Firedance festival community. The highlight will be the lighting of the Sacred Flame that will be used to light all the fires on the site. Join with us as we make our way around the site to the Central Fire. Become part of the Heart of the Community as the fires are lit, drums are played and we dance the magic circle round!

Women’s ritual

A community is only as strong as those who care for it. This women’s ritual will allow us to gather together to help empower and witness our commitments to the Maiden, Mother and Crone.

Closing Ritual

It is time to douse the flames of our festival. As we thank all those who have joined us at this year’s Firedance, we carry the flame within us. Join us as we say our farewells and to forward to the next year.

Christin Dennis

Christin has always held closely to his Native roots. Although he was adopted, he remained free to maintain his indigenous traditions and practices. As a youngster he returned frequently to the reservation where he learned about his heritagee. As he grew older elders went out of their way to help him, and even coerce him into learning more about his roots. He has been doing Lodges for 6 years, apprenticing for 12 years, and still continues to learn from the Elders. “The way we live is like a dance. It can be very expressionistic, or passionate and imaginative. If we allow yourselves to just be, our dance will be joyful.”

Traditional Sweat Lodge

The Lodge is a sacred ceremony where we come together to recreate, heal, and celebrate the remembering of our selves as ONE. We honour each other through the Creator in the Womb of Mother Earth. In the Heart of Father Sky we allow the Grand Mothers and Grandfathers to speak into us with vapor breath of Life, allowing the Creator to speak through the Elements of Creation within/without. Reuniting “All My/Our Relations” in memory of our Ancestral Self. We honour the Sacredness of the lodge by honouring our true self through the Lodge of the People. 3 hours.

He holds a B.A. in Celtic Studies and Religious Studies from the University of Toronto, as well as an M.Phil. from the University of Wales. His book, The Secret Commonwealth and the Fairy Belief Complex (2002) was based on his Masters thesis on fairy beliefs and Second Sight in Early Modern Scotland.

Within the community he strive to emphasis a personal, intimate, and joyful relationship with the deities, ancestors and spirits of nature in the Living World; preferring to emphasize magical Religion over superficially religious Magic. He also feels it is important to have a good grasp of religious history of one’s faith, acknowledging the collective wisdom and insight of who and what has come before us, as well as the differences that make each deity and each culture distinct and valuable.

He currently works as a spiritual care provider at a major Toronto hospital, and as a Pagan (Celtic and Reconstructionist) chaplain at the University of Toronto. Also, as a licensed Wedding Officiant, he is able to perform legal weddings in the province of Ontario. For more information go to www.newtara.org

Introduction to Vedic Magical Chant

Why do people chant ‘OM’? What is ‘OM’, anyway? What other sounds are part of Vedic mantra magic and why would a modern pagan care? Come explore these questions, and the powerful seed syllables that go into mantra yoga, the harnessing of sacred names, words, and sounds. We will also explore how some modern pagans have experimented with seed syllables for western cultures in an effort to gain deeper attunement with the gods or certain powers.

Introduction to Celtic Reconstructionism

Using story-telling, lecture, and discussion, we will explore how some pagans are honouring our Celtic source culture by reconstructing the worship of the ancient Celtic gods, in the context of their own cosmology, their own holy days, folk customs and practices interpreted as best we can for a modern world. This will also be a good primer for those interested in knowing more about the main ritual on Saturday.

Sacred Stories: Narrative as Magic and Sacrament

How can you provoke an experience of the gods? How do you connect the events in your life to the deep themes of the sacred? Would you believe it may be as simple as telling a story? Come discover the powerful, passionate, and sometimes playful, power of myth.

Main Ritual: Sorrow and Celebration

The main ritual will be honouring the relationship between land and culture, in this season of harvest and abundance. While the paradigm will be culturally specific (Celtic Reconstructionist), I hope the meaning will be understood as universal - counting the cost of our impact on the earth, and expressing a hope for a better future, born not from merely turning back to the past, but carrying the wisdom of our ancestors into a new and better future for all.

Robin Armstrong

Robin Armstrong, professional astrologer, I Ching and chanting specialist and musician. Robin invented the Celestial Harp a 72 stringed instrument to play a horoscope. He initiated and ran the Babatunde Olatunji drum stage at Afrofest and has developed a system of drumming called Star Drumming. Robin has been chanting for 40 years, drumming and clapping for 20 years. Sound temples and meaningful rhythms are his forte.

Star Drumming

Star Drumming is a new form of drumming. It is based on drumming the I Ching hexagrams in various ways and in drumming the signs of the zodiac. Hexagrams to play can be chosen from a family relationship, divining an I Ching hexagram and for using planetary positions or New Moon positions to determine the relevant hexagram. Then the hexagram is divided into patterns and played around the circle. Sometimes the whole I Ching can be played in sequence.
In this drawing the I Ching hexagrams are superimposed on the grass in the circle and the zodiac signs are placed around the outer edge of the drum circle.

Do you have what it takes to be a Shaman Spirtualist? What cultures can be drawn from to learn more about this tradition? Where do I find Shamanic teachers and/or healers? What does a Shaman Spiritualist actually do to effect healing? What tools, knowledge, and methods are required? Join me for an open discussion on the subject! If time permits we may put some of these methods into practice!

Design Your Own Pagan Prayer Beads

Beads have been employed as instruments of prayer & meditation in most spiritual traditions for centuries. Prayer beads have a variety of forms and meanings, but the basic purpose is the same: to assist the worshipper in reciting and counting specific prayers or incantations, for spell casting, or to help focus concentration during meditation. Learn about the difference in stringing materials, where to find beads & charms and how to put it all together to create a special set of prayer beads to enhance your daily devotions.
Please be advised that we will not actually be making a set of prayer beads at this workshop, but you will get lots of practical tips and ideas to help you design a set of prayer beads to reflect your own personal practice or purpose through symbolism, colour & material.

Kevin Cote

Kevin is from Sudbury, Ontario and is a didgeridoo player/instructor who has been playing for approximately 10 years.

In the last few years I’ve noticed an increasing popularity for this instrument. Therefore I have started workshops as well as performing live on stage with local bands or doing demonstrations at festivals. I have learned completely independently yet I will be able to demonstrate and coach several different techniques used to play this instrument. I also have researched cultural and historical facts on this instrument that I look forward to sharing with you.

Introduction to Didgeridoo

The workshop will commence with a meditation and breathing exercise. During the meditation I will speak about the cultural and historical facts and uses of the didgeridoo. Following this I will demonstrate the abilities and sounds of the didgeridoo. I will then pass out didgeridoos for those interested in trying to play. I will then spend the next half hour or so helping everyone make some basic sounds and calls. To finish off the workshop I will give you tips on where to buy one and I will also give you exercises that will help you figure out the technique to circular breathing.
